More American Than Apple Pie - The Dallas Cowboys
During the Cowboys' first game of the 1979 season, a
nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals, was
won by the Dallas Cowboys with a score of 22-21. The television
announcer for CBS introduced the Cowboys as America's Team and
ever since then, the name stuck.
The Cowboys have been one of the most successful teams of the
modern era (since 1960). The team has won five Super Bowls and
eight conference championships. The Cowboys have more victories
(41) on Monday Night Football than any other NFL team. They
hold NFL records for the most consecutive winning seasons (20,
from 1966 to 1985) and most seasons with at least ten wins
(25). The team has earned the most post-season appearances
(29), a league record of 56 post-season games (winning 32 of
them), the most division titles with 20, the most appearances
in the NFC Championship Game (14), and the most Super Bowl
appearances (8). The Cowboys also played in two NFL
championship games before the NFL's 1970 merger with the
American Football League. The Cowboys became the first team in
NFL history to win three Super Bowls in just four years (a feat
that has been matched only once since, by the New England
Patriots). They are second only to the Pittsburgh Steelers with
most Super Bowl wins (tied with the San Francisco 49ers with
five each). The Cowboys' success and popularity has earned them
the nickname "America's Team". Before the 2008 season an ESPN's
Page 2 statistical comparison of all teams since the AFL-NFL
merger had the Cowboys narrowly beat out the Pittsburgh
Steelers for the top of its Ultimate Power Ranking. In 2003,
NFL Films released a DVD collection chronicling the Dallas
Cowboys franchise entitled The Dallas Cowboys: The Complete
History of America's Team 1960-2003.
The popularity of the Cowboys as America's Team has been
supported somewhat by such NFL records as "Team with Most
Consecutive Sold Out Games", a streak of 160 home and away
games (including playoffs) that began on December 23, 1990, at
Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium and came to an end on December
24, 1999, in a Christmas Eve game against the New Orleans
Saints in the Louisiana Super Dome. Other examples are the NFL
games featuring the Cowboys that result in record-breaking
ratings at the time of broadcast, such as 7 of the 8 Super Bowl
games featuring the Cowboys and the NFC Championship Game
between the Cowboys and 49ers, the only non-Super Bowl NFL game
to be ranked in the Top 45 Primetime Telecasts of All Time.
With this success and subsequent labeling as Americas Team, it
is no wonder that web sites such as DallasCowboyCountry.com are
"Americas Place" for Dallas Cowboy collectibles, memorabilia,
gifts, caps, and all other types of Dallas Cowboy
merchandise.
